August is Child Support Awareness Month, recognized in Indiana and across the nation. Child support provides crucial financial support for children's necessities such as food, clothing, housing, healthcare and other expenses needed to raise healthy, supported children.
To recognize the importance of the month, Governor Mike Braun has proclaimed this month as Child Support Awareness Month. Read the proclamation here.
The Indiana child support program is administered by the Child Support Bureau of the Indiana Department of Child Services (DCS) and is carried out in partnership by the local prosecutor and clerk of each county.
“The Indiana Child Support Program plays a crucial role in laying the groundwork for a child’s healthy development and well-being,” DCS Director Jennifer Dorfmeyer said. “This month is a chance to educate and remind Hoosiers that these services exist to help children and families thrive.”
In 2025, the program secured more than $504 million in child support, positively impacting over 195,000 families and providing services such as:
- Paternity establishment
- Child support establishment
- Child support enforcement
- Medical/health insurance order establishment
“Child support isn’t just about financial obligations, it’s also about making sure children and families have the resources and support to be successful,” said Indiana Child Support Bureau Director Jocelyn Laird. “Child Support Awareness Month is about raising awareness for the services available to all Hoosier families as well as the staff and other public servants who work tirelessly to ensure children and families have what they need to set themselves up for success.”
