On November 27th, the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) notified Marshall County that it had been awarded Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) funds.
The award was for $450,000, and County Highway Superintendent Jason Peters said these funds will be used for a countywide paint striping initiative. The funds are divided into three categories: preliminary engineering at $54,000, construction at $360,000, and construction engineering at $36,000.
The county must be under contract for the project before March 1st.
County Commissioner Kevin Overmyer asked Peters what roads had been designated for the paint striping project, and Peters said, “They haven’t been designated yet. It’s various, but we will definitely start with the higher-volume roads first.” He said they will use thermoplastic paint, which should last about four years.
Governor Holcomb and INDOT have been working to improve Indiana’s infrastructure; this is just one of the projects they have supported.
The County Commissioners also signed financial commitment letters for safety grants. Peters said one grant seeks funds to replace and update guardrails around the county. The second grant is $518,000 for two digital speed trailers for $70,000, with a local match of $7,000.
