Two new petitions with conceptual plans came before the Shelbyville Common Council Monday night at City Hall.
Both were approved and forwarded to the Plan Commission for its next meeting on Oct. 26.
The first involves the land formerly owned by Blue River Career Programs at the corner of Miller and St. Joseph Streets.
Ash Union and Attica Partners, LLC, now own the property (photo) with the goal of remediating the contaminated land and then developing it as a residential property.
The petition before the council Monday was to rezone the property from Institutional to Business Neighborhood.
The new owners will work with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management’s voluntary remediation program.
The second petition is for land just east of Sunbelt Rentals, 2500 E. Michigan Road, at the corner of Michigan Road and Progress Parkway.
Alt Development is proposing a small business hub or contractor warehouses to provide small businesses or startups with a place to conduct business.
Each building on site would be 900 to 1,500-square feet with heat and electricity and the option to build out an office. The building would also provide storage space for vehicles or work machinery.
In other council business Monday, the annexation petition from Shakespeare Sequestration was approved. The land adjacent to POET Biofuels is being studied for potential carbon capture and sequestration well.

The council approved the $550,000 purchase price for the building and land at 441 E. South Street (photo).
Shelbyville Parks and Recreation Department wants to use the building for storage and operational space and the surrounding land to add parking spaces for the adjacent Sunrise Park.
The council approved a petition to designate land for a proposed refrigerated food storage facility on Mausoleum Road as an Economic Revitalization Area (ERA).
The petition can still be denied or altered at the next council meeting where a tax abatement request from Anderson Dubose, the company that will supply items for McDonald’s restaurants in central Indiana, is expected to be heard.
