The City of Shelbyville’s Behavioral Health and Equity Department will lead a series of community events throughout May in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, aimed at reducing stigma, increasing access to resources, and strengthening community support systems.
The initiative kicks off on Friday with two community-wide efforts: Green Shirt Day, encouraging residents to wear green in support of mental health awareness, and an official 2:30 p.m. Kick-Off Reception at City Hall featuring a proclamation from Mayor Scott Furgeson and Shelby County Commissioners.
Programming throughout the month includes free wellness activities, educational workshops, volunteer engagement opportunities, and family-friendly community events.
Highlights include a Suicide Prevention Walk/Run, a Grief Safe Businesses Workshop in partnership with the Joshua Center, a volunteer appreciation breakfast, and community-building activities such as rock painting and youth-led art installations.
“This isn’t about one day or one event — it’s about building a culture where people feel supported, seen, and willing to speak up,” said Furgeson (photo). “Mental health impacts every family in this community. Shelbyville is taking a proactive approach to lead with awareness, education, and action.”
Behavioral Health and Equity Director Keyen Macklin emphasized the importance of meeting people where they are.
“We’re creating multiple entry points — whether that’s a walk, a workshop, or simply wearing green,” Macklin said. “Mental health doesn’t look the same for everyone, and neither should support. This month is about making it visible, accessible, and part of everyday conversation.”
Additional ongoing initiatives include weekly walk/run meetups, public resource promotion through the Shelby County Public Library, and a county-wide effort to engage local businesses and organizations in mental health awareness.
Residents are encouraged to participate in events throughout the month and share their involvement using #WearGreenShelbyCounty.
