The City of Shelbyville is interested in purchasing land near the downtown Public Square to build a second parking garage.
Mayor Scott Furgeson mentioned a development project for downtown apartments Monday during the Shelbyville Common Council meeting at City Hall. There is discussion about a 170-unit apartment complex that would need parking spaces.
The city is pursuing PNC Bank owned land just east of the Public Square to build a parking garage that would service both the apartment complex and downtown parking needs.
“This is a project we’ve been working on for over a year now,” said Furgeson.
There was no discussion at the meeting over purchase price of the land nor construction cost of the parking garage.
Also on Monday, the common council approved a resolution to purchase the “city dump.”
The city has used a property on the north side of Old Franklin Road for decades as a landfill. The owner of the property is now expressing an interest in selling the property.
“I think it’s an important asset for the city to maintain and have,” said Furgeson. “It’s basically where we do a lot of storage of our limbs, trees and dirt and things we don’t have room for at our city garage.”
An evaluation of the worth of the property is needed to set the purchase price.
