The Shelbyville Police Department with a significant change that became effective Saturday.
Chief of Police Bill Dwenger has chosen to retire from the post and the department. Officially, his retirement date will be March 31.
Shelbyville Mayor Scott Furgeson says Ed Hadley is the acting chief, at this time.
Dwenger with a long and distinguished history with the Shelbyville Police Department, started there as a dispatcher and reserve officer in 1981.
He graduated from the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in 1986 and became a full-time patrolman for the department. Dwenger quickly moved through the ranks and served as Patrol Sergeant, Detective Sergeant, Detective Lieutenant, and Deputy Chief.
Dwenger had served as Detective Captain from 2000 until his appointment to Chief of Police by incoming Mayor Scott Furgeson.
Dwenger also has a business background, majoring in business management, achieving a master’s degree in strategic management, and a doctorate degree in public administration.
Additionally, Dwenger is a 2001 graduate of the FBI National Academy.
