The Marshall County Central Dispatch Center was able to confirm for EMA Director Jack Garner that citizens are still burning even though the county is still under a burn ban.
On October 9, the Marshall County Commissioners issued a countywide burn ban with the recommendations from EMA, and local fire department. Since the ban was enacted there have been 15 calls for 13 fires.
The burn ban was enacted due to prolonged dry conditions which have elevated the risk of fires which could spread quickly. Under the burn ban, open burning of any kind using conventional fuel such as wood or other combustible material is prohibited. The only exception is for grills fueled by charcoal or propane. The ban also prohibits the burning of debris, such as Trash, timber or vegetation including debris from the results of building construction activities.
Small campfires are permitted although the commissioners ask citizens to use great caution if using a campfire.
To report a violation of the burn ban, please contact the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department at 574-936-3187 or 911.
