Shelbyville High School sophomore Reuben Martins-Thomas has been named the Beth Prince State Farm Athlete of the Week.
Sectional wrestling took place across the state on Saturday. Martins-Thomas was the only Shelby County wrestler to claim a sectional championship. He won three matches including a dominant performance in the title match at 190 pounds at the Purdue Polytechnic-Downtown Sectional.
Martins-Thomas scored an 8-6 win over New Palestine’s Eli Oberle in the quarterfinal round of the bracket. In the semifinal, he produced a 13-6 victory over Warren Central’s Byron Baltzell.
In the championship, Martins-Thomas defeated Purdue Poly’s Hernan Justiniano, 21-4.
Martins-Thomas improved to 17-12 this season and will need a regional win over the fourth-place finisher from the Southport Sectional to earn his first semistate berth.
