Indiana HOF Coach Bill Springer passed away

Indiana Basketball Hall of Famer Bill Springer died Saturday.

Springer won 539 games in his 40 year coaching career with stops at Linden, Brazil, Shortridge, Jennings County, Bloomington South and Southport. His 17 years at Southport included the 1990 state finals at the RCA Dome where Southport lost to the Damon Bailey led Bedford-North Lawrence in front of 41,000 fans.

1990 is still the only semistate championship in Southport basketball history.

Springer, 90, was a three-year starter and all-city selection at Indianapolis Washington. He graduated in 1953 and went on to play at Hanover College where he lettered three times.

Springer’s son. Mike, is the head boys basketball coach at Winamac.
