Greencastle looks to continue winning ways

There is an adage in sports that it is not how you start, but how you finish. 

For the Greencastle High School football team, the Tiger Cubs could be positioning themselves for quite a finish to the high school football season. 

After dealing with injuries and setbacks during the bulk of the regular season, a healthy Greencastle team put it all together last week in a 49-28 win over North Putnam to close out the regular season.

"That win let us confirm what we believed about ourselves. We believed that we were a good football team and then when healthy, we could show it. So I would say it definitely helped our confidence," second year head coach David Stephens told The Putnam County Post. 

For Stephens, the success from last week carried over to the practice field this week for the Tiger Cubs. 

"Practice is going great. The kids are really starting to click at the right time," Stephens said. 

Getting healthy at the right time was beneficial last week for Greencastle, and Stephens admits he feels "great" about the Tiger Cubs heading into tonight's Class 2A Sectional 39 opener at Pike Central (3-6). 

"I feel great about my team. We are getting healthy at the right time of the year. We have played a very tough schedule that has prepared us for the competition levels that we could face in a deep post season run," Stephens said. 

Pike Central opened the season 2-0 and enters the postseason on a two game skid, falling to Forest Park and North Posey down the stretch. The Chargers average 22 points per game and have surrendered an average of 28.4 this season. According to Stephens, Greencastle will have to be ready to play when they hit the field. 

"Pike Central has a strong run game and a strong run defense. We are going to have to slow down Grant Boyd and Matthew Meadows if we are going to have a chance to win this game," Stephens said.
