The Lawrenceville basketball Indians storybook season came to an end Thursday on the floor of the State Farm Center in Champaign with a third- place finish in the IHSA Class 1A State Tournament and a record for wins in a season.
The Tribe had their quest to win the championship ended with a 55-47 loss to the Goreville Black Cats in the first semi-final Goreville jumped out on top by scoring the first 9 points of the game and were never headed. They led 15-7 after one quarter and 24-19 at the half. The lead was extended to 36-24 after three quarters. The Indians made a run in the fourth quarter, but the Black Cats hit free throws down the stretch for the win, their second this season over Lawrenceville. Jayden Goff led the Indians with 16 points and Noah Wilson added 11 as the Indians dropped to 34-3 on the season.
They rebounded with a 61-43 win over Lanark (Eastland) later in the evening in the third-place contest led by Zander Cessna with 19 points, Goff and Jacek Mickiewicz each added 12 and Wilson 10, The victory was the 35th of the year, eclipsing the 34-win totals of the 2 back-to-back state championship teams.
