Plymouth - Naomi R. Young, 88, passed away peacefully on July 7, 2026. She was born at home on November 10th, 1937 in Saint Joe County, Indiana to Lowell and Gladys (McGowan) Pickerl. She was previously married to Danny Young.
Naomi graduated from LaPaz High School in 1955 after which she attended Taylor University for one year. For a period of time she lived with family in Hammond commuting on the South Shore to work at a bank in Chicago. Naomi dedicated 9 years working as a bookkeeper at the Farmers State Bank in LaPaz. After getting married she enjoyed raising pigs, chickens and cows on the family farm. She became a substitute rural mail carrier for the United States Postal Service in Bourbon in the early 1980’s and substituted in Argos, Plymouth, Warsaw among other places until eventually getting a permanent route in Wawaka, IN where from she retired after completing 24 years of mail service. She loved delivering the mail and getting to know the people and families on her routes.
Naomi volunteered with several organizations over the years starting with the Marshall-Starke Development Center, the Marshall County Red Cross for whom she coordinated blood mobiles, was on call to help coordinate services in case of family or community emergencies even traveling to the south to help following hurricane Hugo. She was a member of and volunteered for many years with the Marshall County Pork Producers Association working their food stand during the Marshall County Blueberry Festival. She also enjoyed volunteering with the Marshall County Area Lions Club and worked on several projects over the years with Habitat for Humanity of Marshall County. Naomi attended church at the Faith First Fellowship Church, formerly the Bourbon United Methodist Church.
Music and traveling were two of Naomi’s joys, she did many trips with her mother Gladys, son Fred and sister Hattie here in the United States and also traveled abroad to Canada, Honduras, Nicaragua, and several countries on a trip to Europe.
Naomi is survived by her daughter Carman Young, sister Hattie Bierly and brother Dwight Pickerl.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Lewis Pickerl, son Fredrick, son and daughter-in law Gregory and Betty Jean (BJ).
Visitation will be held on Friday, July 10, 2026 from 11Am-1PM at the Oak Hill Cemetery Chapel, 1300 Chester Street, Plymouth, IN 46563. A service for family and close friends will be held immediately following at 1PM with Pastor Kenneth Cooke officiating.
