James Richard “Dick” Hanahan, 93, of Shelbyville, passed away on Friday, April 17, 2026, at the Willows of Shelbyville.
He was born on September 21, 1932, in Shelbyville, the son of Elmo and Mary (Slifer) Hanahan. On June 25, 1960, he married his wife of 65 years, Linda Stang, and she survives.
In addition to Linda, Dick is survived by his children, James Patrick Hanahan and wife, Ruth, of Providence, Rhode Island, Elizabeth Wortman of Long Lake, Minnesota, and David Charles Hanahan of Indianapolis; brother, John Patrick Hanahan of Winchester, Virginia; grandchildren, Mary Lynn Hanahan and Shane Robert Hanahan; and several nieces and nephews.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents; brother, George Michael Hanahan; and sister-in-law, Sarah Hanahan.
He graduated from Boggstown High School and continued his education at Purdue University obtaining his bachelor’s degree in 1954.
Dick was a U.S. Army veteran serving from 1954 to 1956.
He was a member of Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.
Dick was a farmer, retiring in 1988.
He formerly served on the Triton Central School Board from 1972 to 1980.
Dick was a member of the Shelbyville Lions Club and Knights of Columbus.
A gathering of friends and family will be at 12:00 pm, Friday, April 24, 2026 at Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 4218 E. Michigan Road, in Shelbyville.
Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 1 pm with inurnment at Saint Vincent Catholic Cemetery in Shelby County. Father Mike Keucher will officiate.
