Vehicle flips after striking INDOT safety truck on US 31 near Plymouth

A vehicle flipped over Wednesday after striking an Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) truck mounted attenuator on U.S. 31 near Plymouth, officials confirmed.

INDOT crews were actively working in the median at the time of the collision. The attenuator — a specialized safety device mounted to the rear of highway work vehicles — absorbed the full impact of the crash. No injuries were reported.

The agency says the incident is a reminder of why truck-mounted attenuators, or TMAs, are deployed at worksites across the state.

"TMAs are a sign to slow down and move over for road crews," INDOT said in a statement. "When drivers don't abide by that, they also protect our workers by absorbing the impact of a crash and reducing the damage to structures, vehicles and motorists."

INDOT is urging all motorists to remain alert and exercise caution when traveling through active work zones. That includes adhering to posted signage and complying with the state's Move Over law, which requires drivers to move over or slow down when passing vehicles with flashing lights on the side of the road — including highway maintenance crews.

"This attenuator did its job, and thankfully, there were no injuries," INDOT said. "When you see a vehicle like this, please be alert and drive safely so that we can all go home at the end of the day. Road safety starts with you."

No additional details regarding the driver of the vehicle were immediately available.
