Two cases of measles reported in Parke County

Officials from the Parke County Health Department, along with the Indiana Department of Health are investigating a pair of confirmed measles cases in Parke County.

According to a letter from the Parke County Health Department, the cases involve two infected adults residing in Parke County. One patient was unvaccinated, and the vaccination status of the other patient could not be confirmed.

"There is no cause for community concern regarding spread from the two patients, who were isolated while infectious," the letter states.
Measles is a highly contagious virus that spreads through the air when someone coughs or sneezes. If an individual has it, up to 9 out of 10 people who come into close contact with the patient will become infected.

Symptoms of measles include: high fever, a blotchy rash that starts at hairline and spreads, runny nose, cough and red, watery eyes. Symptoms generally appear a week to two weeks after infection but can occur up to 21 days after exposure. If a person develops symptoms, they should seek medical attention immediately.
