The city of Sumner has taken action regarding a member of its police department.
The city council met in special session Thursday May 7th and after an approximately 30-minute executive session, voted to terminate Officer Carlton Valiant of his duties effective immediately. The action comes as the result of an investigation into allegations of multiple department policy violations and misconduct while Valiant was on duty.
Police chief Doyel Hofmann spoke with GIANT-FM WAKO and indicated that the body camera footage of Officer Valiant was viewed as part of the investigation and no criminal offenses or violations were found.
Valiant had recently joined the department and was still on a probationary period. His termination leaves the department one officer short. Hofmann said that the city has a hiring list with two officer candidates, one of which is currently in training. There is no firm timetable for filling the vacancy.
