With summer in full swing and farmers markets bustling across the state, State Representative Jack Jordan (R-Bremen) is encouraging Hoosiers to support local farmers, growers, and small businesses by choosing to shop close to home.
"Across Indiana, Hoosiers have many opportunities to support neighboring farmers, growers and small businesses by choosing to shop local," Jordan said. "From farmers markets to Indiana Grown products, these options make it easy to access fresh, high-quality goods while strengthening our state's agricultural economy."
Indiana is home to more than 200 farmers markets, offering everything from farm-fresh produce and locally raised meats to baked goods, flowers, and handcrafted items. Jordan noted that these markets serve a purpose beyond commerce, acting as community gathering spaces where neighbors connect and local economies grow stronger.
Jordan also highlighted new legislation he supported this year that limits over-regulation of farmers and local vendors, giving them greater freedom to sell their products and expanding access to affordable, homegrown food.
For Hoosiers looking to connect with local agriculture, several resources are available. The Indiana Grown program highlights locally produced goods and ways to support Hoosier farmers. The Indiana Farmers Market Community of Practice helps consumers find nearby markets and provides resources for farmers and vendors. Purdue Extension offers education and support for growers, consumers, and small food businesses. Market Wagon connects customers directly with local farmers, bakers, and artisans for delivery or pickup.
"Whether you are exploring a weekend farmers market or ordering locally made goods online, I hope Hoosiers discover, shop and support Indiana agriculture," Jordan said.
