Shelbyville Central Schools administration wants the commencement ceremony for Shelbyville High School to become an outdoor tradition at J.M. McKeand Stadium.
With a much-needed renovation project for the locker rooms and restrooms for William L. Garrett Gymnasium underway, moving commencement outdoors seemed like an easy call. Depending on how the logistics played out, graduation would remain outdoors in the future, weather permitting.
Mother Nature weighed in and said, “Hold on.”
On Tuesday, parents of Shelbyville High School seniors received word that Friday’s commencement will be inside Garrett Gymnasium because of inclement weather in the forecast.
The administration confirmed with the local fire marshal and Bruns Gutzweiler construction to ensure all safety precautions are taken for the event.
The school message came with specific instructions:
- Guests should enter and exit through Doors D3 and D4, located on the north end of the gymnasium
- The recently renovated restrooms at the north end of the gymnasium will be open and available for use
- The ceremony will be streamed live on the Shelbyville Central Schools’ YouTube page
The graduation ceremony will start at 7 p.m. Friday.
