Rooted in Community, Growing in Nature: Micheal Hensley

As the year draws to a close, Potawatomi Wildlife Park is proud to reflect on the meaningful impact it has made in our community through the launch of our end-of-year campaign, "Rooted in Community, Growing with Nature."

In a heartfelt tribute to the park's legacy, Michael E. Hensley, a strong advocate for preserving Federal, State, and local community parks, shares his personal story and the profound effect Potawatomi Wildlife Park has had on the local community. "This park is essential for residents, providing numerous benefits that enhance our quality of life.," says Hensley. "From the natural setting where families and friends can gather for picnics, children can play freely, and individuals can enjoy leisurely walks and social connections, Potawatomi Wildlife Park is a vital part of our community."

One of the park’s most remarkable features is its designation as Indiana’s first Dark Sky Preserve, awarded by the Indiana Council on Lighting Education (ICOLE). This rare honor allows our community to experience the wonders of the sky free from the effects of light pollution—a vital resource as light pollution continues to rise across the state.

Hensley, who grew up in nearby Argos, Indiana, reminisces about his childhood visits to the park. "It's been at least 20 years since my last visit. Recently, as I began a new hobby in amateur astronomy, I started rediscovering the beauty that Potawatomi Wildlife Park offers." Hensley adds.

Potawatomi Wildlife Park continues to evolve, offering enriching experiences that connect people with nature, history, and each other. As part of the Rooted in Community, Growing in Nature campaign, the park aims to raise $25,000 by December 30th. These funds will help ensure the park remains a vital resource for future generations.
