The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) has approved the annual five year Rail Crossing Safety Improvement Plan.
The plan details implementation of life-saving safety upgrades at highway-rail crossings across the state.
Over $400 million will come from the Grade Crossing Protection Fund and Rebuild Illinois to assist communities in paying for improvement work at over 900 crossing sites, including Lawrence County.
Exact project locations and amounts of funding have yet to be determined.
In 2024, preliminary data from the Federal Railroad Administration shows there were 80 collisions at public rail crossings in Illinois, down from 89 collisions in 2023.
