Potawatomi Wildlife Park empowers youth leadership with board position

In a proactive move to engage youth in community leadership, Potawatomi Park Inc. established a youth board member position in 2022. This initiative aims to empower high school juniors and seniors to advocate for their generation's needs, participate in decision-making processes, and learn from experienced board members. Upon graduation, youth board members can apply for a regular board position.

Following the board's decision, Potawatomi Park Inc.'s management actively collaborated with local schools and community leaders to promote the opportunity. In fall 2022, Alex Gaughan applied for the position after learning about it through his Scout Master, Shawn Hooley, who recognized the role as a significant opportunity for community involvement.

After an interview process with the Potawatomi Park Inc. HR committee, Alex Gaughan was unanimously voted onto the board during the monthly board meeting on November 10, 2022, filling the youth board member position. "I joined because I wanted to give back to the park and the community," stated Alex Gaughan, reflecting on his motivation to serve on the board.

During his time as a youth board member, Alex Gaughan was a valuable asset. He completed his Eagle Scout project involving the repair and installation of benches throughout the park. He also actively volunteered at numerous community events, earning praise from park management for his thoughtful contributions.

Alex Gaughan graduated from Triton High School in May, with plans to study Information Technology at Purdue Fort Wayne. He aims to leverage his education to assist the park in enhancing its technological capabilities post-graduation.

Alex's term as a youth board member concluded on July 11, 2024. Expressing his desire to continue contributing, he successfully secured a regular board member position through a voting process. When asked about initiatives he would like to see in the park's future, Alex mentioned expanding events and increasing involvement from local scouting groups, highlighting Potawatomi's unique appeal for outdoor activities and educational opportunities.

Reflecting on his board experience, Alex Gaughan emphasized the value gained from observing decision-making processes and contributing his perspectives. He encourages other youth to apply for the youth board position, citing the invaluable skills acquired in organizational governance and teamwork.

Potawatomi Wildlife Park spans over 300 acres in Tippecanoe, Indiana. The park remains dedicated to its mission of connecting people with nature, local history, and community through enriching recreational and educational programs.
