The Shelbyville / Shelby County Animal Shelter has paused all cat intakes and adoptions for two weeks.
The move follows a positive test of a cat in the shelter's care for panleukopenia (feline distemper). In response, the shelter noted in a social media release that immediate action was being taken to protect the health and safety of the animals.
Effective immediately:
• All cat intakes and adoptions are paused for the next two weeks.
• All cats currently in the shelter will be quarantined during this period.
While the shelter does vaccinate against this virus, it's not a guarantee that no other cats were exposed. Additionally, the shelter has young kittens who are not yet old enough to receive their booster vaccines, making them especially vulnerable.
Anyone that has recently adopted or fostered a cat from the shelter and has any questions or concerns is asked to contact the shelter. They can offer help and provide guidance as needed.
If someone encounters stray cats during this time, please reach out to the shelter. While the shelter cannot accept them at the moment, the staff will gladly provide resources and options to assist.
Meanwhile, protocols for dogs have not changed. Dogs remain available for foster and adoption.
