Plymouth Police make 2 drug and driving arrests Monday and Tuesday

Plymouth Police officers arrested two drivers on separate occasions this week, one facing OWI charges after a K-9 alert turned up drug paraphernalia and a positive drug test, and another found to be driving on a suspended license.

Monday evening just after 8:00 p.m., Officer Fisher with the Plymouth Police Department conducted a traffic stop on Michigan Road after observing a driver using a cell phone and crossing the center line. The vehicle pulled over at Michigan Road and 11th Road.

The driver was identified as Ashton Gaines, 37, of Muckshaw Road in Plymouth. K-9 Officer Schieber and his partner Kyzer arrived on scene and conducted a free-air sniff of the vehicle. Kyzer alerted to the presence of narcotics, and a subsequent search turned up drug paraphernalia.

Gaines was administered field sobriety tests and submitted to a Sotoxa oral fluid test, which returned positive results for both cannabis and methamphetamine. A certified blood draw was also taken, with results still pending.

Gaines was transported to the Marshall County Jail and booked on charges of OWI on a controlled substance, OWI endangerment, and possession of paraphernalia. She was held on a $1,500 cash bond.

Tuesday, June 16th at 7:42 a.m., Officer Krynock with the Plymouth Police Department stopped a vehicle driven by William O. Long, 56, of Indianapolis, for a traffic infraction on U.S. 31. A check of Long's driving status revealed a suspended license with a prior conviction. Long was taken into custody and lodged at the Marshall County Jail.

Readers are reminded that charging information supported by an affidavit of probable cause is a mere allegation that a crime has been committed and that there is only probable cause to believe a crime has been committed. They are presumed innocent throughout the proceedings and are entitled to be represented by counsel and entitled to a trial by jury at which the State is obligated to provide proof beyond a reasonable doubt before a judgment of guilt may be made.
