One Big Beautiful Bill explained by Congressman Yakym

One Big Beautiful Bill… but what does it actually do? And, more importantly, what does it not do?  

Two weeks ago, House Republicans passed the One Big Beautiful Bill. The bill is now in the Senate for review and will then hopefully be sent to President Trump’s desk.  

The One Big Beautiful Bill isn’t some bloated spending package. It doesn’t give any money to the Department of Education, HUD, or the EPA. What it does is straightforward: cut taxes, rein in federal spending, permanently secure the border, and reform welfare. 

When I’m meeting with Hoosier manufacturers and small business owners or chatting with friends at the grocery store, they’re clear about one thing: They’re taxed enough. And I agree. That’s why it makes the 2017 Trump Tax Cuts permanent. That means bigger paychecks, more investment in America, and strong incentives for companies to stay in the U.S. rather than send jobs overseas.

This bill would also eliminate taxes on tips and overtime pay, provide an additional tax deduction for Seniors, and put more money directly in the pockets of working Americans. It makes the Child Tax Credit permanent, providing real relief to families raising the next generation. And it makes the small business deduction permanent, allowing Main Street businesses to keep more of what they earn.

The bill also delivers historic welfare reform. If you are an able-bodied adult, you should be working. That’s not controversial; it’s common sense. The bill requires at least 80 hours per month of work, training, or even volunteering to continue receiving benefits. Today, 62 percent of able-bodied Medicaid recipients and 74 percent of food stamp recipients are not working at all. That is unfair to the hardworking taxpayers footing the bill. Welfare should be a short-term bridge, not a permanent lifestyle. This bill ensures that benefits are allocated to those who truly need them while promoting personal responsibility and work.

Some have misread the bill and claimed it increases the deficit. That argument doesn’t hold up. Even using the Congressional Budget Office’s (CBO) own numbers, the bill cuts federal spending by over $1.6 trillion – the biggest federal spending cut in history.

It also provides full funding for the southern border wall and border security. No future delays. No back-and-forth in Congress. It gives law enforcement the tools they need to enforce immigration law and remove criminal illegal aliens quickly and efficiently.

This is a bill written by conservatives who listened to voters. It delivers on the priorities people talk about every day: lower taxes, smaller government, and permanent border security. 

At its core, the One Big Beautiful Bill is about respecting the hard work of all Americans. Whether it’s a small business trying to expand, a parent raising kids, or a worker putting in extra hours, this bill says Washington has taken enough. It’s time to give some back.
