Marshall County Commissioners honor citizen for saving Sheriff's deputy's life

The Marshall County Commissioners took time Monday morning to formally recognize and honor a citizen whose quick thinking and selfless actions saved the life of a Marshall County Sheriff’s deputy last month.

During their March 16 meeting, the commissioners presented a special resolution to Colin Barkley, officially acknowledging his heroism during a harrowing winter crash.

The recognition stems from an incident that occurred on February 23, 2026. On that snow-covered day, Sheriff's Deputy Matthew Brown responded to the scene of a multi-car accident along U.S. Highway 31. While working along the side of the dangerous highway, Deputy Brown was assisting those involved in the crash, which included Barkley.

As the deputy was providing aid, Barkley spotted a van hurtling through the snow directly toward Deputy Brown. Demonstrating what the commissioners described as "exceptional courage, selflessness, and dedication to the well-being of others," Barkley leapt into action and physically pushed the deputy out of the path of the oncoming vehicle.

The Board of Commissioners' resolution stated that Barkley's act of heroism "reflects the highest values of humanity and serves as a powerful reminder of the impact one individual can have in protecting others."

Noting that it is fitting and proper to honor an individual who saved the life of a local first responder, the board expressed its deepest appreciation and admiration for Barkley. He was presented with a copy of the resolution as a formal token of gratitude on behalf of the people of Marshall County.
