Motorists traveling on U.S. 30 should prepare for significant traffic changes starting next week as a major resurfacing project gets underway between U.S. 35 in Starke County and Donaldson in Marshall County.
The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) announced that contractor Rieth-Riley Construction Co. Inc. will begin implementing lane closures on U.S. 30 between U.S. 35 and Union Road on or after Tuesday, April 7. The extensive roadwork is scheduled to continue through the end of November.
For the first two to three weeks of the project, the inside left lanes will be closed at both ends of the construction zone to allow crews to build median crossovers. Once these crossovers are complete, Phase One of the project will begin. During this initial phase, all eastbound lanes will be converted to accommodate two-way traffic, while the westbound lanes will be entirely closed for construction.
The project will switch to Phase Two in mid-August. At that time, the traffic pattern will flip, with the newly finished westbound lanes taking on two-way traffic while the eastbound lanes are closed for their portion of the roadwork.
Drivers should also anticipate ramp closures at the U.S. 30 and U.S. 35 interchange toward the end of each construction phase. During Phase One, westbound access to U.S. 35 northbound will remain open until later in the season, when it will close for three weeks for repairs. A similar three-week closure will affect the U.S. 35 northbound ramp to U.S. 30 eastbound near the conclusion of Phase Two.
The comprehensive project includes milling and resurfacing, pipe work, pavement markings, and both full and partial depth patching. INDOT explained that depth patching involves removing the roadway down to its base to address underlying structural issues. This ensures durable, long-term repairs before the final smooth driving surface is applied.
INDOT is urging drivers to allow extra travel time and to follow all traffic directions carefully. Motorists are reminded to slow down, exercise caution, and drive distraction-free when navigating through the work zones.
