July 2024 Unemployment rates

The unemployment rate of the State of Indiana in July stood at 4.0%, according to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. By comparison, the national unemployment rate for July stands at 4.3%.

In addition, Indiana’s labor force participation rate of 62.5% is now .1% higher than it was in June but still slightly below the national rate of 62.7%. This rate is the percentage of Hoosiers 16 and older who are either working or actively looking for work. Those not in the labor force include, primarily, students, retirees, and other non-working populations, such as individuals unable to work due to a disability or illness, or adults responsible for their family's childcare needs.

Marshall County is 52^nd on the list of the 92 counties in Indiana with a rate of 4.6%. Last month Marshall County was ranked 44^th with an unemployment rate of 4.2% and in May we were 36^th with a rate of 3.9%.  Looking over the last few years, the 2023 unemployment rate in July for the county was 4.3% ranking us 19^th and in 2022 it was 2.9% with a 69^th ranking of the counties.  IN 2021, coming out of COVID the unemployment rate in Marshall County was 3.1 and in 2020 during the heat of COVID the rate was 6.9%.

Looking at the counties surrounding Marshall County will find five of the seven ranked between 15^th and 21^st.  St. Joseph County has the highest unemployment rate at 5.6% ranking them 15^th of the 92 counties in Indiana.  Starke County is 17^th with a rate of 5.5%.  Kosciusko, LaPorte, and Elkhart Counties are 19^th, 20^th, and 21^st.  K-County has an unemployment rate of 5.4% along with LaPorte and Elkhart County’s is 5.3%.

Fulton County is 43^rd on the list of counties with a rate of 4.7% and Pulaski County is 81^st with an unemployment rate of 4.0%.   

Howard County is at the top of the list of counties in July with an unemployment rate of 7.0% and Martin County is at the bottom of the list with an unemployment rate of 3.6%.

Indiana’s total labor force stands at 3,387,066.

Private sector employment in Indiana was unchanged over the last month. In July of 2024, Indiana reported 2,859,300 jobs.

Industries that experienced job increases in July included:

Leisure & Hospitality (+ 2,000);

Trade, Transportation & Utilities (+2,000);

Construction (+ 1,400); and

Professional and Business Services (+1,300).

As of July 16, 2024, there were 96,433 open job postings throughout the state. As of the week ending on July 27, 2024, Indiana had 20,275 continued unemployment insurance claims filed.
