The Indiana State Police (ISP) and the Sullivan County (Ind) Sheriffs Department have released additional information regarding the officer-related shooting that occurred April 10th that resulted in the death of a man with Lawrence County (Ill) ties. The report indicates that the autopsy and forensic evidence revealed that 54 year old Cameron Lee Atkins of Sullivan did die as the result of a gunshot wound by law enforcement officers on the afternoon of April 10th. They were serving a protective order to Atkins at a Tulip Tree Lane location when he alledgedly pointed a firearm at the two deputies. They then drew their handguns and fatally shot him. Atkins has relatives and family here in Lawrence County. The two officers involved have been identified as Phelan (PJ) Montgomery, a four year department veteran and Hunter Givens, a three year veteran. Both remain on administrative leave as per departmental policy. a final report by the ISP will be given to the Sullivan County Prosecutors Office for review after the investigation is concluded.
