Indiana's 911 Service gets a boost thanks to Treasurer Elliott and Statewide Board

From cybersecurity to training to operational funding, the Statewide 911 Board is taking proactive steps to ensure Indiana’s emergency communications system remains one of the strongest in the nation.

“Every day, 911 professionals across Indiana answer the call—literally—to protect their neighbors and save lives,” said Indiana State Treasurer Daniel Elliott, Chairman of the Statewide 911 Board. “It’s our responsibility to make sure they have the tools, training, and support they need to do their jobs with confidence and excellence. Hoosiers deserve nothing less.”

Following a successful statewide cybersecurity assessment in 2024, the Board is now preparing to launch Contingency Preparedness and Planning exercises to further strengthen local PSAPs' ability to respond during system outages or crisis events.

In addition, the Board invested $588,000 last year in professional training for Indiana’s more than 400,911 dispatchers and call-takers. These training programs are provided at no cost to local governments, helping ensure that emergency response personnel are equipped with the latest knowledge and best practices to serve their communities effectively.

“Our team regularly visits PSAPs across the state, listening and learning from the people who do this critical work,” said Jeff Schemmer, Executive Director of the Statewide 911 Board. “Their dedication is inspiring, and it motivates us to find new ways to support them.”

To help sustain daily operations, the Statewide 911 Board also distributes $71.1 million annually to Indiana counties. This funding provides the equipment, staffing and infrastructure that keep local 911 systems running smoothly.

Thanks to these strategic investments, Indiana continues to be recognized as a national leader in 911 call delivery—providing fast, reliable service to every corner of the state.

“Our goal is simple,” said Treasurer Elliott. “When someone in Indiana dials 911, they should know help is on the way. We’re working every day to make sure that promise is kept.”

About the Statewide 911 Board
Indiana’s Statewide 911 Board is a quasi-state government agency operates under the Indiana Treasurer's Office.  It has statewide jurisdiction over 911 services.  It's chair, by statute, is an elected official—the state treasurer.  The board's two primary responsibilities include collecting surcharges from all communication service providers and distributing the funding to local units of government, as well as the operation of a statewide public safety ESInet for 911 calls, including Text to 911 services.
