Indiana University students will be in Plymouth today, Friday as part of a statewide collaborative initiative aimed at improving public spaces in rural communities, Plymouth City Attorney Jeff Houin told members of the Park Board during Monday's meeting.
Plymouth has been selected as one of several communities across Indiana to participate in a program led by the IU Center for Rural Engagement, which pairs university students with rural towns to develop concepts for public art, parklets, trails, and early-stage architectural designs.
Students from IU's Rural Placemaking Studio will spend Friday exploring the downtown area and the residential neighborhoods surrounding the park, with a particular focus on the northeast corner of Michigan and Jefferson Streets. The goal is to generate ideas and proposals that could enhance and revitalize that corner for the benefit of the broader community.
Heartland Art Center served as the non-profit applicant that was officially awarded the Rural Engagement initiative with Indiana University, making the Plymouth project possible.
In related news from Monday's meeting, Park Superintendent Mike Hite reported progress on the northeast corner property itself. Hite told board members that staff located a gazebo on the site, along with a couple of picnic tables and a trash can. Employees have already painted the structure, and it is expected to be leveled this week in preparation for further improvements.
