At 12:38 a.m., crews responded to a structure fire at Brickyard Brandywine Healthcare at 745 N. Swope Street.
In a press release, the department notes that quick actions of nursing home staff prevented a potentially devastating situation. Two alert staff members noticed a fire in a patient room, promptly removed the patient, and closed the door to help contain the flames. Another staff member activated the fire alarm by pulling the manual pull station, triggering an immediate response.
Staff members began sheltering residents in place while the Greenfield Police Department (GPD) and Hancock County Sheriff’s Department (HCSD) assisted with evacuations. Twenty-eight residents in the affected wing were either evacuated or sheltered in place. One resident was treated and transported to the hospital, and a staff member was treated for smoke inhalation and released at the scene.
The facility’s sprinkler system performed as designed, extinguishing the fire and preventing it from spreading beyond the room of origin. Only the sprinkler heads in the fire room activated, minimizing further damage.
While the cause of the fire remains under investigation it is believed to have been accidental.
