Greencastle named one of most Scenic Small Towns in Indiana

The accolades continue to come in for Greencastle, as the city has recently been recognized as one of the most scenic small towns in Indiana. 

According to WorldAtlas, Greencastle is one of seven most scenic small towns in the Hoosier State, joining the likes of Rockville, Franklin and Corydon, among others. 

"The area is a great venue for hiking, boating, fishing and picnicking. Continue to explore the scenic sights of this Indiana town at the DePauw University Nature Park, which covers over 520 acres on the west side of the DePauw campus," the article states. 

The article also touched on Greencastle's artistic side, culture and DePauw University. 

For local officials, the distinction is one they make sure to mention to residents and guests, alike. 

"Greencastle truly feels like a Hallmark movie come to life. Our outdoor recreation scene is flourishing with beautiful parks and pathways that offer the perfect escape into nature. Whether you love hiking, biking or just enjoying a peaceful walk, our trails and green spaces provide plenty of opportunities to connect with the outdoors," Putnam County Chamber executive director Madison Hanna told The Putnam County Post. 

Main Street Greencastle executive director Russell Harvey echoed those sentiments, stating he was "surprised" with the honor. 

"I was surprised in a good way. It sometimes feels like folks don't know we're here even though that isn't true. However, we all know what a great place this is. I am very happy to see Greencastle being recognized. We've had great city leaders who put in a lot of work over the years. I am glad to see people realizing and acknowledging how beautiful and wonderful our city is. Hopefully, it leads to more people shopping, eating and just enjoying Greencastle," Harvey said. 

Hana said in addition to plenty of opportunities to fish, bike or hike, Greencastle features a downtown that features plenty for everyone. 

"Our downtown is steeped in history and filled with beautiful buildings that tell the story of our past. It's a place where you can shop, dine and gather with friends, all while taking in the charm and character of our historic streets. The sense of community here is strong, and you'll always find friendly faces and a welcoming atmosphere," Hanna said. 

Both said there is plenty to be proud about when it comes to Greencastle. 

"We're proud of the strong sense of community that defines Greencastle. It's a place where neighbors know each other, support local businesses and come together for events and celebrations. There's a true sense of belonging here that makes Greencastle not just a beautiful place to visit, but a wonderful place to live," Hanna said. 

Harvey said there is plenty for both residents and visitors to do in Greencastle. 

"There's so much to do here. Open mics, Parkfest, live music in restaurants, great food, fantastic people, wonderful shops, Musicfest, First Fridays, a community theatre, shows and speakers at DePauw, there is a lot to do and see. I've said it before, but we're small but mighty. For those that live here, dig deeper into your community and see all that's here. For those out of town, we'd love for you to visit and discover a great midwest community," Harvey said.
