Being a first responder can often be a thankless job, but such is not the case for the Greencastle Fire Department.
The department recently received a podium from Kevin Orme, Indiana Department of Corrections Executive Director of Construction Services, as a token of appreciation for the work the fire department did in 2024.
On July 31, 2024, Greencastle firefighters responded to a serious auto accident involving a pickup truck and an IDOC transport van. While on scene, firefighters extricated four patients, two of whom were employees at the Putnamville Correctional Facility.
Greencastle Fire Chief Rob Frank told The Putnam County Post the podium was an "awesome gift."
"It is an awesome gift. Kevin Orne has been around the fire service for some time and contacted me about making the podium after seeing our old one on a Facebook post. He wanted to show gratitude for the work we did on a vehicle accident that involved two IDOC Putnamville Corrections Officers," Frank said.
Orme, along with Chief Dunkley and Warden Pretorius recently delivered the podium to the Greencastle Fire Department.
"We will use it for swearing in, promotion ceremonies and any other speaking engagements we may have at the firehouse. I told Kevin we never expect anything in return for the work that we do, but he insisted and we are grateful for the recognition," Frank said.
Greencastle Fire was assisted by the Indiana State Police, PCEMS, Putnam County 911, Putnam County Sheriff's Office, Greencastle Police, IDOC, State Flight, Air Evac and Lifeline on the day of the accident.
