Local and area law enforcement authorities in southeastern Illinois are warning the public about a recent rash of phone scams involving the purchase of gift cards. Residents have reported being scammed out of thousands of dollars through the schemes. A person will receive a phone call requesting that they purchase a gift card to avoid utility or phone service disconnections, to get a larger cash refund, bail a relative out of jail and other reasons. These are scams. If in doubt, hang up and contact your local law enforcement agency. People can also contact the Federal Trade Commission which tracks scams and fraud cases at toll free 1-877-275-3342.
