The LaPaz North Township Fire Territory responded to a fatal house fire at 212 South Street on Thursday afternoon, February 27th at 4:45.
Polk Township Fire, Bremen Fire, the Plymouth Fire Department, and Lakeville Fire all assisted along with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department.

The Marshall County Coroner Dean Byers was notified of the death and called to the scene at 5:21 p.m.
The deceased was Francis Shafer age 79. He was discovered inside his home while the house fire was being extinguished.

An autopsy has been scheduled to assist Investigators in determining the cause and manner of death.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the LaPaz Fire Department, Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office, and Marshall County Sheriff’s Department.
