The National Weather Service in Northern Indiana is warning of excessive heat on Tuesday for northern Indiana including Marshall, Starke, Pulaski, Fulton, LaPorte, St. Joseph, Elkhart, and Kosciusko counties.

The Excessive Heat Watch will be in effect from Tuesday morning through Tuesday evening.  Dangerously hot conditions with heat index values around or greater than 105 are expected.

Extreme heat and humidity will significantly increase the potential for heat related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities.

There is the chance that thunderstorms and/or clouds could cut into how high temperatures get across the area, but it is still expected to be warm and humid. Overnight heat indices Tuesday morning and Tuesday night bottoming out around 75 will make it harder for those affected by heat related conditions to recover, especially without air conditioning.

As a precaution, citizens should monitor the latest forecasts and warnings for updates on this situation. Be prepared to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. This is especially true during warm or hot weather when car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.
