A Carlisle man briefly led officers on a chase and then threatened self harm before surrendering to police Saturday morning.
According to Parke County Sheriff Jason Frazier, Parke County deputies initially tried to stop a 2020 Dodge Durango on U.S. 41, but the driver refused to stop and accelerated at a high rate out of speed out of Rockville.
Minutes later, the suspect ran out of gas at the intersection of U.S. 41 and 4th Street in Lyford and brandished a weapon. The driver, later identified as Coby L. Moreland, 31, Carlisle, threatened to self harm himself and made his way to a nearby field, where he continued to threaten self harm.
Shortly after 5 a.m., a negotiator from the Terre Haute Police Department SRT arrived and spoke to Moreland for several minutes before Moreland emerged and surrendered to police. He was arrested and booked in the Parke County Jail on the following charges: Resisting Law Enforcement with a deadly weapon and Unlawful carrying of a handgun.
The Parke County Sheriff's Department was assisted by the Rockville Police, Vigo County Sheriff's Office, Vermillion County Sheriff's Office, Clinton Police, Terre Haute Police and the Indiana State Police.
