Shelbyville Mayor Scott Furgeson has stated the city will aggressively work to improve nuisance properties in 2025.
On Tuesday morning at City Hall at the Board of Public Works and Safety meeting, an order to clean up the residence at 1216 Elm St. was approved after the owner has been non-responsive to requests to appear at the board meeting.
The city street department will clean up the property and the cost will be billed to the property owner.
Furgeson is a member of the Board of Works along with Rod Meyerholtz and Tom Reaves. The board meets weekly on Tuesday mornings at 8:30 a.m. at City Hall.
Another nuisance property at 309 E. Mechanic St. has been improved but the board was not satisfied that a fence was built around materials still in the back yard.
The board felt the owner was hiding the issue and not rectifying the code violation. Further inquiry will be made to the property owner about the situation.
The board also approved orders to appear for the owners at 1022 Lincoln St., 830 Quesada St., and 102 N. Vine St. to discuss code violations.
