The Argos Police Department is putting drivers on notice: slow down in the U.S. 31 construction zone at State Road 10 and Dewey Street / 17th Road, or expect a speeding ticket.
Officers are actively monitoring the area and will cite anyone exceeding the reduced speed limit.
The warning comes as the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is in the midst of converting the U.S. 31 and State Road 10 intersection in Marshall County into a Reduced Conflict Intersection (RCI). The $700,000 project, being executed by lead contractor E&B Paving LLC, permanently closes the median at the intersection to eliminate dangerous cross-traffic and left turns. Drivers will instead use right-in/right-out turns combined with designated median U-turn areas.
The center crossover at the intersection of U.S. 31 and Dewey Street/17th Road — located south of the railroad bridge — closed on Tuesday, July 7, as construction entered its next phase. Dewey Street/17th Road now offers only right-in/right-out access to U.S. 31. Once construction is finished at the end of July, drivers will use median U-turns at Dewey Street and another location north of State Road 10 to navigate the corridor.
The current RCI project is considered an interim safety improvement. INDOT is already designing a major interchange project slated for 2028 that will elevate State Road 10 over U.S. 31, permanently eliminating at-grade cross-traffic at the intersection entirely.
Until then, drivers are reminded to observe posted speed limits in the construction zone — and to expect enforcement.
