What began 50 years ago in a small plant in Plymouth, American Containers has expanded to include three strategically located manufacturing facilities, with plants not only in Plymouth but also in Carrollton, Georgia, and Stockton, California.

American Containers serves customers coast-to-coast and internationally.

On Monday night, American Containers appeared before the Plymouth City Council to seek a tax abatement for the purchase of new box-making equipment for a new product line. The equipment is valued at $5.8 million and will enable American Containers to retain 73 jobs and add at least two additional full-time positions, paying $23 per hour plus benefits.

Currently, its California plant manufactures the packaging for an Ohio-based company and ships the product across the country. This new equipment in Plymouth will reduce shipping costs, with the packaging being made in Plymouth and shipped to Ohio.

Councilwoman Kayla Krathwohl inquired about the duration of the tax abatement and was informed it will be a five-year abatement phased in at 20% annually.

The City Council took the first step in the tax abatement process and adopted a resolution declaring the real estate of American Containers to be within an Economic Revitalization Area. At the next city meeting on Oct. 13, a public hearing will be conducted on the tax abatement request.
