Akron’s 4th of July festival, with the theme of “A Good Day,” offers something for the whole family Thursday.
The theme was chosen in honor of late Akron resident Joe Day, who was a staple at his family business, Day Hardware, and a member of the Henry Township Volunteer Fire Department for more than 47 years.
He was known for replying to people who said to “have a good day” with “I am a good Day.”
The Henry Township Volunteer Fire Department’s firemen’s breakfast is 7-10 a.m. at the fire station. A flag raising by the Fulton County Honor Guard is at 9 a.m.
Morning festivities also include Akron Las Donas Club’s Firecracker 5K, with the 5K Walk at 8 a.m., the 1-mile Fun Run at 8:15 a.m. and the 5K run at 8:30 a.m.
The parade is at 11 a.m., with line-up starting at 9 a.m.
Activities in Pike Memorial Park include a 3-on-3 basketball tournament and a coed volleyball tournament, both at 9 a.m.; food, retail vendors and inflatables for children, from noon-10 p.m.; a petting zoo and pig races, 1-3 p.m.; the Jim Bucher Memorial Car Show, 1-4 p.m.; laser tag and inflatable axe throwing, 5-9 p.m.; children’s games, 7-9 p.m.; and the band Gunslinger, performing from 7-10 p.m.
The town’s fireworks display, sponsored by the fire department, will be launched at 10 p.m.
