Tri ends Waldron's win streak in sectional semifinal

Waldron’s seven-game win streak started with a victory over Tri on Feb. 7. That win streak came to an end Friday with a 56-44 loss at Tri in the Class A, Sectional 59 semifinal round.

Mason Butler scored a game-high 19 points and Jonah Cox had 14 to lead the Titans to the Sectional 59 championship game where it will face South Decatur, a 61-37 winner over Edinburgh Friday.

The Mohawks (16-8) and Titans (15-9) played to ties at the end of the first quarter (13-13) and halftime (22-22) Friday night at Tri High School. The Titans extended the lead to seven points midway through the third quarter but the Mohawks cut the lead to 41-37 at the break.

Butler scored nine of his 19 points over the final eight minutes when Tri outscored Waldron, 15-7.

Ethan Moody led Waldron with 16 points. Caige Sheaffer and Eli Stewart each finished with 13. Matthew Campbell was the only other Mohawk to score (2 points) in the loss.

Waldron’s 16 wins were the most since the 2013 season when the program finished 22-1.
