For only the second time this season, the Class A #1 ranked Lawrenceville Indians have tasted defeat.
The Tribe dropped to 23-2 after a loss to the #11 ranked Goreville Black Cats 50-45 Saturday in the 14-team Rich Herrin Classic in Benton. They led 12-9 after one quarter, but the Black Cats rallied to lead 25-24 at the half and 36-33 after three quarters. The game see-sawed back and forth in the final quarter with Goreville coming up with some key offensive rebounds and defensive plays down the stretch to secure the win.
The Indians were paced by Jayden Goff with 17 points and Noah Wilson with 10 as they saw a 10-game winning streak snapped in the process.
Goreville was led by game MVP Zech Green who scored 19 points including five three-point baskets to lead the 20-3 Black Cats, who have won three games in a row.
The Indians return to action Tuesday night when they make the short trip to Bridgeport to meet the Red Hill Salukis in a Lawrence County battle. It will be "Pack the Place" night at Red Hill Jr/Sr High School Gym.
