Greencastle's Stephens picks up first offer

A season ago, Greencastle quarterback Cole Stephens showed what he could do under center for the Tiger Cubs.

As a freshman, Stephens helped guide Greencastle to a Western Indiana Conference title and a run in the postseason.

His efforts have been getting some notice, and resulted in the rising sophomore to pick up his first football offer this weekend. After attending a camp at Miami (OH) University, Stephens picked up an offer from the Red Hawks.

"I participated in Miami's one day camp and really performed well, especially in the 1 v 1 portion of camp. Also, Coach Buis, the former Greencastle head coach, has a relationship with the head coach at Miami and that really got the coaching staff's eyes on me. Coach Martin told me he was impressed with the way I carried myself at camp. He liked my confidence and leadership," Stephens told The Putnam County Post.

Stephens said getting the offer from the defending MAC champions was "amazing."

"I have put in a lot of work and have thought about this day for a long time. I am more grateful than anything that the coaches of Miami see the potential in me at such and early stage of my high school career. I couldn't be more pleased that my first offer came from the defending MAC champions," Stephens admitted.

Stephens said the off-season has gone well for not only him but his teammates.

"Our team is in the second year of our schemes. Offensive and defensive installation has gone really smooth. I look forward to getting all of our guys back and being full strength this week at practice," said Stephens, adding several teammates had been out due to baseball's semi-state run.

A season ago, Stephens helped Greencastle finish 8-3, while setting two single game passing records, was named the Putnam County Player-of-the-Year, All-WIC and All-Wabash Valley. He admits the offer from Miami will only push him.

"The offer has already led to more exposure. The more light that is on our program, the more opportunities my teammates will have to showcase their abilities on the football field," said Stephens, who will camp at Kentucky and Indiana this summer.
