Class 3A, No. 5 Shelbyville had to work a little longer to defeat Greensburg a second time this season.
On Saturday at Garrett Gymnasium, the Golden Bears raced out to a 14-1 lead but struggled in the second quarter and only had a 1-point lead at halftime.
Caden Claxton scored 10 points in the third quarter and Brody Runnebohm and Gavin Reed connected on a trio of three pointers in the fourth quarter to secure a 71-61 victory.
Shelbyville improved to 10-2. Greenburg lost its fourth straight to fall to 4-8.
Shelbyville defeated the Pirates in the semifinal round of the Bob Wettig Tournament in Richmond on Dec. 30. In that game, the Golden Bears hit 10 3s and limited Greensburg to just 13 field goals in a 76-50 victory.
On Saturday, Shelbyville led 18-12 after one quarter.
Logan Simpson sank a pair of 3s in the second quarter and Max Buening scored six of his team-high 13 points to cut Shelbyville’s lead to 32-31 at halftime.
Claxton, Runnebohm, Reed and Mar Nicholson combined to score 38 of Shelbyville’s 40 second-half points to produce the win.
Claxton finished with a game-high 19 points. Reed hit five 3s to get to 17 points. Runnebohm ended with 15 and Nicholson had 11.
Jacoby Miller finished with 11 points and three assists for Greensburg. Simpson had nine points and five assists.
The Golden Bears won the junior varsity game, 47-34.
Shelbyville is at Columbus East (4-4) Tuesday then hosts Pendleton Heights (8-2) Saturday.
