As a child, he attended the Free Methodist Church and later the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Birds. He was baptized at the age of 15 in the East Pinkstaff gravel pits by Rev. Ellis Thompson. He completed elementary school in Birds in 7 years, taking grades 5 and 6 in the same year. He graduated from Lawrenceville High School in 1956. The Gospel Four recorded a project at Crusade Studios in Flora and The Gospel Heirs recorded 3 projects at Crusade Studios. The Gospel Four sang in the amateur group division at the National Quartet Convention in Nashville, TN in the late 1970s. One of his greatest blessings was to be able to play for revivals in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and Florida. The Gospel Heirs were chosen as Group of the Year by the Indiana Gospel Music Association and also Group of the Year by the Illinois Gospel Quartet Association.
He was called into the ministry in March 1981 and served the Bee Branch Community Church for some 12 years. He was ordained by the local church and when retiring from the active pastoral ministry in 1992 moved his ordination to the Global Harvesters Missionary Organization. He then joined the North United Methodist Church in Vincennes, IN, and in January 1992 the North merged with the Wabash and the Trinity to become the Community United Methodist Church. Rex continued to work as visitation coordinator and worship accompanist. In 2023, the Community United Methodist Church changed its name to the Community Church of Vincennes.
