James R. “Jim” Whited, 79, of Cloverdale, passed away peacefully at home on May 30, 2026, surrounded by his family and loved ones.
Jim was born July 28, 1946, to the late Kenneth and Rosemary (Ramsey) Cassady.
On February 16, 1968, Jim married Gilda Juanette (Grimes) Whited, who survives. Together they built a life centered on family, commitment, loyalty, and love. To those who knew him best, Jim was a devoted husband, a proud father, and a deeply loving grandfather. His family was the center of his life, and caring for his wife, whom he called “Nette,” was one of his greatest priorities.
Jim proudly served his country in the United States Army and remained committed to supporting his fellow veterans throughout his life. He was a member of American Legion Post 281 in Cloverdale, where he previously served as Post Commander and in the Honor Guard.
Jim spent much of his career in sales, where his outgoing personality, sense of humor, and ability to build trust served him well. He had a way of making people feel comfortable, valued, and respected.
Those who knew Jim will remember his loyalty, stubborn streak, sense of humor, and fierce love for his family. He loved George Jones and country music, enjoyed sharing a cold beer and a laugh, and found great satisfaction in working with his hands. Jim’s garage was his workshop, retreat, and happy place, where he spent countless hours tinkering, building, and figuring things out. He enjoyed woodworking and made birdhouses, picnic tables, and just about anything someone asked for if it sounded like a good challenge.
Jim was a lifelong fan of auto racing, NFL football, and IU basketball. He especially loved NASCAR and the Indianapolis 500, and even as his health declined, he hoped to watch one more Indy 500. He did.
To his sons, Jim was a constant source of love, encouragement, advice, and support. He taught by example: to work hard, keep your commitments, treat people well, do things with integrity, and never give anything a half-effort. Above all, he had a gift for making his family feel loved, valued, and supported, and his presence was one of the great steady blessings in their lives.
In addition to his wife, Gilda “Nette” Whited, Jim is survived by his sons, Thomas Whited and Marcus (Kimberly) Whited; and his grandsons, Alex Whited, Jackson Whited, and Carson Whited.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his adoptive father, John B. Whited; his brother, John S. Whited; and his sister, Mary Wilson.
A Celebration of Life is being planned and will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Legion Post 281 in Cloverdale. Condolences may be shared at www.whitakerfunerals.net.
