Betty Barbara Roark, 90, of rural Sumner, IL, passed away Friday, August 8, 2025 at Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Newburgh, IN after suffering a stroke earlier in the day.

Betty Barbara Roark, 90, of rural Sumner, IL, passed away Friday, August 8, 2025 at Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Newburgh, IN after suffering a stroke earlier in the day.

She was born at home January 22, 1935 in rural Bruceville, IN. Betty was the eldest daughter of Earl and Helen (Cullop) Sartor. On August 13, 1961, she married Carl Roark Jr. in Bruceville, IN. He preceded her in death on April 27, 2013.

Betty enjoyed growing up on the farm. She had many fond memories of the dogs, cats, and horses. When she was 11 years old, her baby sister, Peggy, was born. They were best friends until Peggy's passing in 2016.

After graduating from Bruceville High School, she went to work at Arthur Chapman’s Accounting Office.  She continued working there part time as she went to Vincennes University to obtain her nursing degree. She briefly worked as a nurse before getting married, moving to Illinois, and working beside Carl on the farm. Together, they raised three children. 

She was a member of the Prairieton United Methodist Church where she played the piano for many years. She enjoyed giving piano lessons to her children and grandchildren.

Betty is survived by her daughter: Carla Jo Roark of Sumner, IL, daughter: Mary Ann Lane of Olney, IL, son: Carl and his wife Donna Roark of Dundas, IL, grandchildren: Joseph Lane of Carbondale, IL, Matthew (Donna) Lane of Plymouth, MN, Emma Roark of Decatur, IL, Abigail Roark of Mattoon, IL, and Sara Roark of Dundas, IL, and great-grandchild: Joshua Lane of Plymouth, MN, along with two nieces and one nephew.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister: Peggy Bobe, and an infant daughter: Rita Jill Roark. 

There will be a graveside service on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, at 11:00 am in the Sumner Cemetery. James Majernik will be officiating. There will be no public visitation.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Humane Society of Olney.
