The Shelbyville Plan Commission has approved site development plans for a new Wawa convenience store and fueling center and the new campus layout for the St. Joseph Catholic Church.
More details from the proposed Wawa in Shelbyville were discussed during Monday’s commission meeting at City Hall.
The 2.3-acre property located at 825 E. State Road 44 is the site of the former Heritage Automotive car dealership. There are currently three buildings standing on the property that will be demolished to make way for a 6,000 square foot convenience store with eight fuel pumps and 43 parking spaces.
The convenience store will have a drive-thru window used to pick up mobile app orders.
Wawa intends to have over 11,000 square feet of greenspace and landscaping on site, including the planting of 71 new trees and over 250 shrubs.
Typical Wawa locations maintain 40 retail jobs.
Wawa is currently expanding into Indiana with four sites already open in the Indianapolis market with 10 more to open in the state by the end of the year.
The Wawa site in Shelbyville is not expected to be open until late 2026.
St. Joseph Catholic Church
The local church, located at 125 E. Broadway, has been purchasing surrounding properties with the goal of expanding its campus.
On Monday, the site development plan for that expansion was approved by the commission. It will include the construction of a new building on the southwest corner of the property and the addition of more parking spaces to fill the church’s need.
