Traffic Stop in Plymouth leads to arrest of Warsaw man on multiple driving charges

A traffic stop on Wednesday evening resulted in the arrest of a 28-year-old Warsaw man who was found to be driving without a license and had an active warrant out for his arrest.

According to the Plymouth Police Department, Officer Fisher initiated the stop at approximately 5:54 p.m. on Wednesday, March 18. The officer observed a vehicle traveling east on U.S. 30 from Oak Drive with an expired license plate. A check of the registration also indicated that the vehicle's owner had a suspended license.

Officer Fisher activated his emergency lights to conduct the stop on U.S. 30 just west of Michigan Street, but the driver continued traveling and did not come to a complete stop until reaching Plymouth Goshen Trail.

Upon making contact with the driver, police identified him as Cruz Barbosa-Murillo, 28, of Warsaw. During the investigation, officers determined that Barbosa-Murillo had a prior conviction for driving while suspended and had never been issued a driver's license. Furthermore, a background check revealed that he had an active, no-bond warrant out of Marshall County for those exact same offenses.

Barbosa-Murillo was taken into custody at the scene and transported to the Marshall County Jail. He was booked on his outstanding warrant with no bond, as well as new preliminary charges of driving while suspended with a prior conviction and operating a vehicle without ever receiving a license.

His vehicle was impounded by Lyons Towing. Barbosa-Murillo is currently being held on a $500 cash bond.

Readers are reminded that charging information supported by an affidavit of probable cause is a mere allegation that a crime has been committed and that there is only probable cause to believe a crime has been committed. They are presumed innocent throughout the proceedings and are entitled to be represented by counsel and entitled to a trial by jury at which the State is obligated to provide proof beyond a reasonable doubt before a judgment of guilt may be made.
